Tabula Chorographica Armenica, a stunning 17th-century map depicting notable Armenian churches in the Ottoman Empire.

Created by Eremia Chelebi K’eomiwrchean and Luigi Ferdinando Marsili, this massive map depicts the expansiveness of the Armenian Church in the late 1600s, featuring 800 sites across the Ottoman Empire, including the major Armenian ecclesiastical centers: the catholicosates of Etchmiadzin, Gandzaar in Artsakh, Aght‘amar, and Cilicia; and the patriarchates of Jerusalem and Constantinople. Also depicted are important churches and sites in the Ottoman Empire—all the way from Nishapur, the location of the martyrdom of Lewondeank, to the churches and monasteries of Crimea.

The map is huge—almost 4 by 12 feet (or roughly 120 by 358 centimeters)—and incredibly detailed.

The Tabula Chorographica Armenica was commissioned by Count Marsili, an Italian nobleman who lived a life worthy of an action movie. Marsili was sent to Constantinople in 1691, a moment when Vienna had opened peace talks with the Ottomans as part of the Austro-Turkish conflict.

The map disappeared for centuries few years after Marsili returned from Constantinople, only to be rediscovered in 1991 in Bologna, Italy and was displayed at the Met museum in 2019.

New Study Exploring the Construction of Ancient Armenian City #Artaxata (Established in 180 BC).

Artaxata was a major city and commercial center of ancient #Armenia which served as the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia from its founding in 176 BC to 120 AD, with some interruptions. It was founded during reign of King Artaxias I (Artashes), the founder of the Artaxiad dynasty.

Armenia, embroiled in the conflicts between #Rome and #Parthia, reached transregional prominence under Tigran II. Artaxata faced violent destruction, including partial damage in 66 BC during Tigran the Younger’s uprising and further devastation in AD 59 by Corbulo.

New Urartian Temple with 2 inscriptions found in Van.

A 2800-year-old Urartian Temple constructed by King Menua, including two cuneiform inscriptions, was uncovered during recent excavations at "Körzüt Castle" in Van (modern-day Turkey). This tower-type water temple is part of an extensive citadel stretching from north to south. The northern facade of the temple showcases a six-row cuneiform inscription, highlighting its significance as a sacred site.

Excavations have also revealed two tandoors (tonir) and partially damaged blue-plastered adobe bricks. Notably, the blue plaster on these mud bricks is a characteristic feature of Urartian temples, leading archaeologists to speculate about potential mythological scenes carved in brown or black on these blocks.
