In honor of his 200th birthday the Russian state gallery opened an exhibit to the public on the 29th of July at the State gallery of Tretyakov in MoscowΒ titled:
“Ivan Aivazovsky. In honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth.”

Equally in honor of the 200th anniversary of the artist Ivan Aivazovsky, Russian media Tass revived his paintings, in a creative short video, see bellow:
The Russian text in the video reads as follows:
“He founded the maritime genre for the Russian arts. Ivan Aivazovsky; In honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth.”
The Tass website also hosts various quizzes about Aivazovski encouraging visitors to play and to get to know the painter better. The first statement reads :
“The real last name of Aivazovsky was Aivazyan!”

It is very interesting to read that the quoted site refers to his last name as Aivazyan. In all the Russian sources and literature about the artist is “Russian”. In fact in the Russian Museum of Moscow where his largest piece “Ninth Waive” is exhibited there was no single reference about his being Armenian. A friend who jut returned from the Baltic tour mentioned about his argument with the tour guide who repeatedly insisted about the “Russian origin painter”.
